Where Did the Images Come From?
The images for the coffee cups came from a collaboration I had with Donovan
Foote, a Chicago area artist. I was looking for some unique images for some
t-shirts I wanted to have for my web site. I spoke with him a couple of times
of my ideas and then he went to work. For several weeks Donovan thought about
my suggestions. He drew a number of different sketches. We talked about his
ideas and my ideas. Then he added color and filled in detail. Today, I am proud
that my coffee cups are unique. The designs are fun and full of unique
characters and brilliant colors. Every time I use my "Papa was a Bad Seed"
coffee mug I see some detail that Donovan added to the image that I hadn't
noticed before. I think it is important to know that the artist had fun drawing
these images.
The images of the flowers were taken at my home in the Chicago area. One of the
flowers has a butterfly enjoying the sweet nectar of the butterfly bush. It
really is an unique photo with so many different facets to find interesting
everytime you enjoy a sip of your favorite hot beverage in one of these coffee
cups. These printed mugs can handle the heavy duty lifestyle of a multi-cup
coffee drinker. As a programmer by trade, I can assure you they will last
through the worst you can put them through. They are unusual coffee cups with a
fun twist.
CafePress begins with a white ceramic coffee mug. Then they take one of my
custom images full of color and imprint the image onto the cup. The mug is then
treated so it can withstand a lifetime of washing. The colors stay brilliant
from the first sip of coffee to the last espresso. This is a great coffee lover
gift for that someone special in your life.

History of the Coffee Mug
Humans have had a need to transport and hold water for tens of thousands of
years. In the early days of humans we created clay pots and small clay cups.
These cups were designed to hold water, wine and other drinks of interest. as
you can imagine early humans added personalization to their drinking utensils.
They added color, special designs, using different materials, soils and pottery
motifs. These drinking mugs were highly stylistic.
In the early days of archaeology we couldn't always tell what our shards of
pottery really represented. But, today we have the ability to categorize these
pottery pieces into exact ages of humans. We know by looking at the colors
used, the materials contained, the thickness and the neck size of different
vessels when it was made and by what culture. We have dated pottery shards and
pieced them together to determine the shape of the object and the year it was
created and used. We know if the pottery came from the Pueblo culture in
America or the old Roman culture in Europe. We are able to tell function based
on the shape of the bowl or pitcher. Does it have a handle? Does it appear to
be burned on the bottom?
There were specialists in cities that created the pottery and cups. Then after
manufacturing the clay cups they were distributed throughout a large area.
Pottery might be traded for food, animals, beads or shells. These ceramic
pieces were shaped by artisans. Then color was added to the material. Designs
and additional color were added to the ceramic cups before finally being fired
at a high temperature.
When Did Coffee Cups Originate
First we need to know the history
of coffee. It appears it first started being used in the 1600s and came
from beans harvested in the mountains of Ethiopia. Coffee beans today are grown
in over 50 countries in the world. The varieties of coffee that we drink are
sometimes named for the country where the coffee bean is grown. The history is
also shown to originate even a little
before the year 1000 AD.
So, even though pottery mugs and ceramic cups have been around for more than
10,000 years the coffee cup or coffee mug has only been around for 400 to 1000
years. As a spice in the early days of coffee, it was very expensive and could
only be purchased by the very rich. Today, in America, anybody with $3 in their
pockets can go to Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts and get the coffee they love in a
plastic or styrofoam coffee cup.
Just like the early days of pottery, there are manufacturing facilities that
make the unique coffee mugs we use on a daily basis. Some coffee cups have
handles to prevent your hands from burning from the hot liquid inside. Others
are smaller and do not have handles. Over the years the coffee cup material has
changed. It is still made with fired ceramics, but there are also cups and mugs
made from glass, stainless steel, plastic, in travel cups and for sitting
before the home fire in the early morning. Artists have made mugs in the shapes
of human faces. Artists create unique images that are placed onto the cup and
then fired to hold the color. You can find coffee mugs for cartoon characters,
political campaigns, advertising campaigns and corporate sponsorships.
Today we brew coffee, cappucino, espresso and many varieties of coffee for our
ceramic mugs and cups. If you walk into any home in the country there is a
coffee cup for dad, mom and plastic cups for the children to use. But, normally
we don't allow the kids to have coffee. We are worried they might be a little
too hyper-active. But it is okay to drink coffee, hot chocolate, tea and warmed
alchoholic beverages in our personalized and unique coffee mugs.
I hope you have enjoyed our little history of coffee and coffee mugs. I think
if you look at the coffee cups we have above, you can find a cup or mug that
will be perfect for you or a loved one. I have given a few away and they are
always greeted with excitement and I receive wonderful comments from the people
that receive them. I am sure that you can gift these coffee mugs to your
friends and family. They are unique and fun images. Each coffee cup is made to
high manufacturing standards and will last through multiple dishwasher
washings. They can be microwaved and can handle boiling water safely.
